The four bottles are made of glass with the inside-painting of plum flower, blossom cymbidium, bamboo, and chrysanthemum respectively. The narrow bottle-neck requires artists to have special skills to draw pictures inside of the bottle. The paint brush has to be inserted through the bottle neck and manipulated within the limited space.

The four species symbolized the qualities of friendship and nobility in ancient Chinese culture. In modern times, they collectively represent all of the highest qualities of mankind.
